Bob Marchant was born and raised in the Wimmera district of country Victoria. His experiences during these early, formative years in the Australian outback are often depicted in his paintings. Bob studied at the Royal Melbourne Technical College (now known as RMIT). However, he only began painting full-time at the age of 40, when he returned to Australia after living in London for almost 20 years. Bob burst onto the Australian art scene, winning two consecutive Sulman Prizes in 1988 and 1989, and the Mosman Art Prize in 1992. Bob has had solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, France and the USA, and his work is represented in both private and public collections, nationally and internationally. Bob now lives with his wife, Inger, at their studio in Bundeena, NSW, a small town in the Royal National Park, which provides inspiration from the surrounding flora and fauna.

Rich with images and scenes of Australian life, Bob Marchant’s observationalist style is a narration of experiences and memories. While the nature of the work is often referred to as naïve, Marchant paints with intricacy and intention.

In his latest body of work, the local flora and fauna continues to be a source of inspiration,

as does his wife and life muse, Inger. Bursting with life, there is an undeniable sense of heart and sentiment within Marchant’s paintings, as his characters and themes are depicted with delight and humour.

Dedicated and passionate, Marchant has produced an extensive oeuvre for his 40 years as a full-time artist. He states that “life is short... art is long” and that he will continue to paint for the next decade before hanging up his brushes.
