Street artist Kaff-eine, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, has painted two rainbow-coloured unicorns prancing triumphantly in a circle, wearing shiny gold rings around their horns, celebrating the passage of marriage equality legislation in Australia. Unicorns are popular icons of this community, as is the rainbow Pride flag. Kaff-eine has painted large, muscular unicorns, using the colours of the Pride flag. They represent the majesty, strength, fabulousness and beauty of the community. The unicorns’ hindquarters are peppered with symbols representing the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, and Kaff-eine has followed the classical equestrian statue tradition of using horses’ legs to depict the riders’ manner of death: two forelegs in the air indicated that the rider died in battle. In honour of those Australians who advocated and fought so hard for marriage equality, and those who didn’t live to see marriage equality in their lifetimes, Kaff-eine has depicted the unicorns with forelegs dancing aloft.

This work is part of a collection commemorating marriage equality becoming a reality in Australia. Eight artists were commissioned by The Store by Fairfax to create new works that celebrate this landmark event. View the full collection here
