In his short, tempestuous life, the Dutch-born post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) produced more than 2000 artworks, many of them in his adopted country of France. His oeuvre includes still-lifes, portraits, self-portraits and landscapes, characteristically painted using bold, expressive brushwork and vivid hues. He is considered a major influence on early-20th-century Western art movements, such as Fauve and German Expressionism, along with his avant-garde contemporaries, Emile Bernard and Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh’s powerfully sombre early works depicting scenes from the ordinary lives of Dutch peasant workers, such as The Potato Eaters (1885), evolved into the vibrant, expressive colours and bold brushwork that reflected so vividly his fascination with the natural world and the seasonal cycle of rural life in France. It was in Arles, in the sun-drenched south, that much of his most well-known work was produced. After his death by suicide, at the age of just 37, he came to symbolise the archetype of the ‘tortured artist’ and continues to be regarded both critically and commercially as one of the great painters of the late 19th century.
