Artist: Kate Nolan. Ficus macrophylla, Moreton Bay Fig, was collected and planted in the Sydney Botanic Garden by Charles Fraser in 1823. Under Charles Moore, Director 1848–96, it became the favoured tree for planting in public spaces across Sydney. The Moreton Bay Fig naturally occurs in all rainforest types north from the Shoalhaven River in New South Wales to Bundaberg in Queensland. It is widely cultivated, and the fruit is eaten by birds and flying foxes.
